A sophisticated same sex Stoke Newington wedding, at Stoke Newington Town Hall and Clissold House.
When Alison & Lydia got in touch with me, they already had the most important parts of their day booked (ceremony, reception, and caterers) but needed a hand with their décor, running their day, and some advice on the rest.
Alison & Lydia had been together for years, and I learned in the speeches that Alison had almost given up hope of getting married, when Lydia proposed while they were on holiday in India.
They planned their ceremony at Stoke Newington Town Hall, followed by a sophisticated but relaxed soiree at Clissold House. They are locals to the area, so both venues held a special place for them, and it helped keep their day relaxed in that they knew the venues well – they told me they visited Clissold Park most weekends and that they just loved spending time there, so it made complete sense to have their wedding there. It also made planning super easy for them; they could pop back whenever they wanted to visualise their walk from the town hall, their entrance, and the general flow of the day.
We had 54 adults for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, which is the perfect size for dining at Clissold House – intimate, but with a great atmosphere.
Clissold House is council owned, so we had a few strict rules to work around, especially with the venue being right in the middle of a public park (specific time windows for deliveries, collections, more specific things you can and cannot use, no glass outside, etc) but through careful planning and liaising with each supplier directly, we made it happen.
…I had to do some décor trickery to make their hanging lanterns work right enough though, as you’re not allowed to stick anything to or on the walls of course, but with some twine and some metal S hooks on the windows, I got them to stay up eventually!
Their cake was made by one of their best friends and was one of the biggest I have ever seen in real life! I actually couldn’t even believe the friend carried it in by herself, never mind made it all!
The day that followed was a relaxed soiree with some of their nearest and dearest, eating good food, lots of cake, and being entertained by some very funny but heartfelt speeches – one of the highlights of the day for me was when Lydia gave her speech and surprised Alison with a painting she’d had specially commissioned, depicting the scene where they got engaged in India.
It was a beautiful and very sophisticated same sex Stoke Newington Town Hall wedding, ending wonderfully at Clissold House.
